Nebelung

The Nebelung is a rare, long-haired relative of the Russian Blue — a graceful, silver-blue cat with a shimmering coat, gentle disposition, and a loyal, reserved personality that makes it a deeply rewarding companion for patient owners.

Nebelung Photo

The name Nebelung comes from the German word for “creature of the mist” — Nebelwesen — and it suits this cat perfectly. The Nebelung is ethereal in appearance: long-bodied and fine-boned, with a coat of medium-long silver-blue fur that catches light like silk and gives the cat an almost luminous quality in certain conditions. It is the longhaired version of the Russian Blue, and like its shorthaired relative, it is reserved, gentle, and uncommonly loyal. The Nebelung does not surrender its affection quickly — it takes time to trust — but once it does, the bond it forms is deep, exclusive, and lasting.

1. History and Origins: Born from a Blue Ghost

The Nebelung is a young breed with a clearly documented and somewhat poetic origin story.

Cora Cobb and Misty

In the early 1980s, a black domestic shorthair owned by Cora Cobb of Denver, Colorado, was bred with a male resembling a Russian Blue. Among the resulting kittens was an unusually beautiful longhaired blue male that Cobb named Siegfried. A subsequent litter produced a longhaired blue female named Brunhilde. Cobb immediately recognized the distinctive, ethereal quality of these cats and began a deliberate breeding program to establish their type.

Building the Breed

Because the longhaired blue gene had almost certainly entered the Russian Blue population through undisclosed outcrossing at some point in the past, TICA’s breed standard committee agreed to base the Nebelung standard on the Russian Blue standard with modifications for coat length. Russian Blue cats known to carry the recessive longhair gene were used to develop the breed and broaden the gene pool.

Recognition

TICA granted the Nebelung preliminary recognition in 1987 and full championship status in 1997. The breed remains relatively rare outside of dedicated breeders, which makes encountering a Nebelung feel like something of a discovery.

2. Appearance: Silver Mist in Motion

The Nebelung’s appearance is refined, graceful, and quietly spectacular. It is not an instantly dramatic cat like the Bengal or the Sphynx — its beauty reveals itself more slowly, in movement and in light.

The Coat

The coat is medium-long, fine, and extremely silky. It lies close to the body rather than standing away from it, which emphasizes the breed’s long, lean silhouette. The undercoat is soft and dense, providing warmth and contributing to the coat’s substance. The guard hairs are silver-tipped, which creates the characteristic shimmer — in sunlight or strong indoor light, the Nebelung’s coat almost appears to glow from within.

The fur forms a ruff around the neck and chest, tufts on the ears, feathering on the legs, and a full, plumed tail. The tail is particularly impressive, often appearing fuller than the rest of the coat.

Color

The Nebelung is exclusively blue — the same range of cool gray tones seen in the Russian Blue, from light ash to deeper slate. The silver tipping on the guard hairs gives the blue a luminous quality that photographs beautifully and looks extraordinary in person.

Body

The body is medium-long, lean, and fine-boned — what breeders describe as the “foreign” type. The Nebelung is longer and more slender than breeds like the British Shorthair or Persian. Males typically weigh between 7 and 11 pounds; females between 5 and 8 pounds. Despite the slender frame, the musculature is well-developed and the cat is athletic.

Eyes

The eyes are large, slightly oval, and vivid green — a hallmark of both the Russian Blue and the Nebelung. Kittens are born with yellow eyes that gradually transition to green as they mature, typically reaching the full adult color by around two years of age.

3. Personality: Loyal to the Few

The Nebelung is not a cat for everyone, and it knows it. It selects its people carefully, invests deeply in those relationships, and maintains a polite but clear reserve with everyone else.

Reserved with Strangers

The Nebelung will typically disappear when unfamiliar visitors arrive. It is not afraid — it simply has no particular interest in meeting people it has not chosen. This behavior can be mistaken for shyness or unfriendliness, but it is better understood as selectivity. Once the Nebelung has assessed a person over repeated visits and decided they are acceptable, it will acknowledge them — and eventually, perhaps even seek them out.

Deeply Loyal to Its People

Within the family it has chosen, the Nebelung is a different cat entirely. It will follow its favorite people quietly around the house, settle near them in the evenings, and sleep beside them at night. The loyalty is not performed or intermittent — it is constant and genuine. Owners who travel frequently report that their Nebelungs visibly miss them and display pronounced joy on their return.

Gentle and Non-Aggressive

The Nebelung is a gentle cat with excellent impulse control. It almost never bites or scratches in anger. If overwhelmed by handling or noise, it retreats rather than retaliating. This makes it a genuinely safe cat for households with considerate older children.

Intelligent and Observant

Nebelungs are intelligent cats that observe their environment with close attention. They learn household routines quickly, remember things for a long time, and notice when anything changes — a moved piece of furniture, a new smell, a different schedule. This sensitivity means they do not adapt to change as quickly as more easy-going breeds.

Quiet

The Nebelung is a quiet cat. It does not vocalize frequently and its voice, when used, is soft. This makes it a good choice for apartments or for owners who appreciate a quieter household companion.

4. Care and Maintenance

Grooming

The medium-long coat requires regular attention to stay in good condition, but the Nebelung’s minimal matting tendency makes it less demanding than heavier longhaired breeds. Two to three brushing sessions per week with a soft slicker brush and a wide-tooth comb is usually sufficient to keep the coat tangle-free and gleaming. Pay particular attention to the ruff, the area behind the ears, and the hind legs.

During seasonal shedding, more frequent grooming will be needed to manage the volume of loose undercoat. The Nebelung sheds moderately and consistently rather than in extreme seasonal waves.

Stability

Because the Nebelung is sensitive to change, maintaining a stable environment contributes significantly to its well-being. Sudden changes in routine, new people, or household disruptions can cause stress. When changes are necessary, introducing them gradually — where possible — reduces anxiety.

Enrichment

Nebelungs are intelligent cats that benefit from environmental enrichment: puzzle feeders, interactive toys, window perches with interesting views, and regular but unhurried play sessions. They are not hyperactive, but they need consistent mental engagement to stay mentally healthy.

5. Health and Lifespan

The Nebelung is generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 11 to 16 years. Its close genetic relationship to the Russian Blue means the two breeds share a similar health profile.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

HCM can occur in Nebelungs, as in most breeds. Routine veterinary cardiac monitoring is recommended, particularly in older cats.

Urinary Tract Issues

Nebelungs, like Russian Blues, can be predisposed to bladder and urinary tract problems. A diet with appropriate moisture content — including wet food as a regular component — helps maintain urinary tract health.

Weight Management

The Nebelung’s lean body type means that weight gain is visible relatively quickly on its slender frame. Portion control and regular weighing are sensible precautions, particularly in less active indoor cats.

Sensitivity to Anesthesia

Some blue-coated cats, including Russian Blues and potentially Nebelungs, may metabolize certain anesthetic agents differently. Inform your veterinarian of the breed before any surgical procedure requiring general anesthesia.

6. Is a Nebelung Right for You?

Ideal for:

  • Patient owners who appreciate a deep, earned bond over time
  • Quiet households or apartments
  • People who want a visually spectacular but low-drama cat
  • Owners who are home regularly and can provide consistent companionship

Less ideal for:

  • Households with frequent guests, loud children, or significant daily disruption
  • Owners who travel frequently or are away from home for long periods
  • People who want an immediately friendly, social-with-everyone cat

Conclusion

The Nebelung is a cat that does not give itself away. It assesses, considers, and chooses — and if it chooses you, the reward is one of the most quietly devoted companionships in the cat world. Its silver-blue coat shimmers like morning fog. Its green eyes hold an intelligence that does not miss much. And its loyalty, once extended, is not retracted. For the right person in the right household, the Nebelung is simply extraordinary.
